1. Context & Challenge
International money transfers have traditionally been slow, expensive, and opaque. Users sending money across borders faced unpredictable fees, poor exchange rates, and transfer times measured in days rather than minutes.
Our client, a major financial services company, wanted to build a modern cross-border payment platform that could compete with the likes of Wise and Remitly while serving their existing customer base in emerging markets.
Key Challenges
- • Existing system had 3-5 day transfer times
- • Hidden fees resulted in poor customer trust
- • No real-time visibility into transfer status
- • Compliance requirements varied across 38+ markets
2. Research & Discovery
I led a comprehensive research phase involving user interviews, competitive analysis, and technical feasibility studies with our engineering and compliance teams.
User Research
- • 45 user interviews across 8 countries
- • Survey of 2,000+ existing customers
- • Competitor product analysis (Wise, Remitly, Western Union)
- • Journey mapping of current remittance flows
Key Insights
- • 78% prioritized speed over lowest fees
- • Trust signals (tracking, notifications) were crucial
- • Users wanted to lock-in exchange rates
- • Mobile-first experience was non-negotiable
3. Solution Design
Based on our research, I developed a product strategy focused on three pillars: speed, transparency, and trust.
Speed
Real-time transfers with smart routing to find the fastest path
Transparency
Upfront pricing with locked-in rates before confirmation
Trust
Real-time tracking and proactive status notifications
Technical Architecture
- • Multi-corridor payment routing with fallback providers
- • Real-time FX rate aggregation from 12+ liquidity providers
- • Automated AML/KYC compliance checks per jurisdiction
- • Event-driven architecture for instant status updates
4. Execution & Launch
We followed an iterative development approach with phased rollout to minimize risk and gather real-world feedback.
Phase 1: MVP (Months 1-3)
Launched with 5 high-volume corridors (US→India, US→Mexico, US→Philippines, UK→Pakistan, UAE→Bangladesh)
Phase 2: Scale (Months 4-6)
Expanded to 20+ corridors, added bank account deposits, and integrated additional payment providers
Phase 3: Optimize (Months 7-8)
Full 38+ market coverage, recurring transfers, rate alerts, and business API launch
5. Results & Impact
The platform exceeded all success metrics and became a flagship product for the client.

Key Wins
- • Reduced average transfer time from 3 days to under 30 minutes
- • NPS score improved from 32 to 67
- • 4.7★ rating on app stores
- • Successfully processed $500M+ in first year
6. Key Learnings
What Worked
- • Phased rollout reduced risk and allowed iteration
- • Obsessive focus on transparency built trust
- • Real-time tracking became a key differentiator
- • Cross-functional team alignment from day one
What I'd Do Differently
- • Start compliance integration earlier in the process
- • Build internal tools for ops team from Phase 1
- • More investment in automated testing for edge cases
- • Earlier focus on recurring transfer use case
