It’s a common sight: writers, musicians, and content creators are tirelessly searching for shortcuts to generate massive traffic for their creations. They meticulously search the online realm for so-called marketing ‘tricks’ that promise to turn their average content into an instant viral sensation.
I’ve experienced this myself, and I can confirm that these efforts are ultimately futile.
When I started writings, I remember throwing together a half-hearted article about sleep, a subject that I knew next to nothing about other than that everybody else was talking about it. I published the piece and sat, waiting — utterly baffled that it attracted next-to-no views.
After a few months, one of my ex-colleague and I met up and rushed to publish a couple of contents, and waited impatiently for our fanbase to grow. Yet nobody, to our absolute amazement, was even interested was interested to read those out, no matter how hard we tried to promote.
Why did I fail in both of these instances? The answer is obvious. The problem wasn’t that I was bad at marketing, that the industry was too saturated or that I needed to get better at promoting myself on social media.
The problem was that I, like many others, just wasn’t good enough.

The Unspoken Reality Nobody Wants to Hear
No one enjoys being confronted with the notion of inadequacy. Yet, if our quest for increased exposure revolves solely around superficial tactics, we’re essentially assuming that further improvement is unnecessary.
If our sole concern is attracting readers, then our content must already possess remarkable quality. Otherwise, we’d be dedicating our energy to refining it, rather than fixating on marketing strategies.
The predicament lies in our relentless pursuit of shortcuts and instant success formulas. We hunger for the alchemy of crafting articles that amass views, applause, and shares. In our aspirations, we cast envious glances at literary titans like Hemingway and Orwell, naively hoping that mimicking, borrowing, and imitating will miraculously grant us the desired readership and engagement.
This fixation on discovering an elusive secret to success is misplaced. There are no clandestine codes or algorithms governing this realm. Consider the legacies of Hemingway and Orwell. Did Hemingway waste his formative years devising hacks to infiltrate newspapers? Did Orwell embark on his journey by mimicking Dickens and Austen, manipulating trends to ensnare readers?
Absolutely not.
They toiled day in and day out, honing their craft through relentless practice and studying the works of literary luminaries. Their writing stands the test of time not due to unraveling cryptic codes, but because it resonates genuinely with readers.
Yet, here we stand, novices in our respective fields, fixated on shortcuts, algorithms, and purchasing social media promotions, instead of earnestly striving to refine our writing.
However, a critical realization awaits us. While we may successfully lure audiences through clickbait and aggressive marketing, retaining their interest hinges on the value of our content. Without genuine substance, they won’t remain.
If we aspire to turn our way with words into a viable vocation, the crux lies in our dedication to enhancing our writing prowess.

Maintain Focus and Stay Committed
If your articles remain unnoticed, your posts lack applause, and your content elicits no response — should your immediate solution be a deeper dive into marketing tactics? Is a more aggressive approach the missing link? Have you miscalculated Medium’s algorithm?
In the pursuit of establishing ourselves as writers, impatience often creeps in. It’s simpler to swiftly publish content and strive for instant popularity than to invest effort into refining our craft, allowing it to organically attract traffic and engage genuine readers who resonate with our work.
Our fixation on traffic generation has surpassed our dedication to honing our writing skills. Amidst a flood of mediocrity, countless authors churn out averagely crafted content, tirelessly endeavoring to amplify its reach.
But the truth lies elsewhere. Marketing was never the pivotal answer. The genuine key lies in enhancing your writing prowess.
From start to finish, your core emphasis should be on this pursuit. While it’s certainly worthwhile to maintain online self-promotion and maximize engagement through content marketing, keep the bigger picture in sight. None of these endeavors holds a candle to the importance of mastering your craft.
For when your audience forms a genuine connection with your content — content born from relentless hard work, unwavering perseverance, and an unyielding commitment to refining your art — they will respond. They will applaud your stories.
Support will flow not because you baited them with sensationalism, not due to an encounter with your sponsored Instagram post, and certainly not because you borrowed another’s originality.
Support will flow because they genuinely appreciate the work you produce. That’s the crux, as your job is to create masterpieces.
